Contractors will soon begin working a multiple phase water main replacement & improvement project in East China Township.

Receipt of this letter does not mean that work will be taking place at your home or property. But water service reductions/shutdowns may be needed near your home to shut down a water main on an adjacent street.  Project completion is tentatively scheduled for summer of 2024.  You will be notified by DPW staff prior to any PLANNED  interruptions in water service. as well as any boiled water advisories. Details regarding water service restrictions will be included in the notice of interruption. Maps showing the locations of these projects are available at: www.eastchinatownship.org.

    12/11/2023  DWSRF Project Update

PHASE 1:              Complete replacement of all water mains installed in 1945.

REASON:              This water main and control valves have reached their useful life expectancy.  To deliver water efficiently & reliably to our residents, new main lines, valves, fire hydrants, & service connections will be installed.

Status:                  River Rd, south of Orchard Drive: new water main installation, service connections to homes, and property restoration has been completed.
Items remaining:  Disconnection and grouting of old water main, removal of abandoned fire hydrants/valves, & final property restoration.

Orchard Drive & Walnut Drive: new water main installation, service connections to homes, & rough grading have been completed.
Items remaining: removal of abandoned fire hydrants/valves, ditching & final grading, final restoration of road shoulder & yards.

Pointe Drive, North of Walnut Drive: new water main installation, service connections to homes, removal of abandoned fire hydrants/valves, & property restoration has been completed.
    Items remaining: final restoration.

Pointe Drive, from Orchard Drive to bridge over canal: new water main installation & some rough grading has been completed.

Items remaining: service connections to homes, rough grading, removal of abandoned fire hydrants/valves, ditching & final grading, final restoration of road shoulder & yards.

Pointe Drive, from bridge over canal to River Rd: some new water main installation has been completed.

Items remaining: completion of new water main installation, service connections to homes, rough grading, removal of abandoned fire hydrants/valves, ditching & final grading, final restoration of road shoulder & yards.

River Rd, from Recor Rd to Puttygut Rd & Chamberlain Drive: Installation of new water main and all associated work remains to be completed.

PHASE 2:              Replacement of existing high priority water main valves.

REASON:              Existing “double disk” style valves have become obsolete & unreliable due to age and material degradation.  Contractors will isolate an existing valve through valve operation or “line stopping” to allow for the removal of the old valve and replacement with a new “resilient wedge” style valve.  The new valves will allow our operators to reliably and effectively isolate segments of water main for repairs and flushing.

Status:                  Valves south of Meisner Rd: valves have been replaced & restoration has been completed.
Items remaining: final restoration & valve box grade adjustment.

Valves north of Meisner Rd: all water valve replacements and associated work remaining.

PHASE 3:              Abandonment of undersized water main.

REASON:              A segment of 6” diameter water main installed in 1945, will be disconnected from our distribution lines and abandoned.  Homes whose water service is currently connected to the undersized water main will be transferred to a 12” distribution main that was installed parallel to the 6” main in 1987.

Status:                  All service line connections to 12” water main and property restoration has been completed.                                 Items remaining: removal of abandoned fire hydrants, pressure grouting of abandoned 6” water main, & final property restoration.

PHASE 4:              Rehabilitation of master meter vaults.

REASON:              As we continue to conserve resources, water accountability continues to be a high priority.  As we continue to improve our water systems reliability, tracking water use and efficiently isolating & repairing water leaks is essential.  This phase will involve the rehabilitation of the existing meter vaults located at Bree Rd/St.Clair Hwy and Recor Rd and include installation of new master meters for China Township.  The new master water meters will allow for accurate tracking of water use and movement between the two partnered communities.

Status:                  Bree Rd/St. Clair Hwy: rehabilitation & restoration has been completed.
Items remaining: installation & calibration of flow meter.

Recor Rd: meter vault water proofing, electrical connection, entry replacement, installation/calibration of flow meter, & final restoration.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work together towards the completion of this project. For questions regarding this water main project, please leave a message at (810)-765-8879 ext. 131. We will return your call as soon as possible.
